What is equality? How can you explain this to children? Can gender equality be physically experienced?
The dance piece “Equality!” is about a woman and a man who want to be the same. With full physical engagement, they find all sorts of absurd, humorous, serious ways to show what equality between two people of different gender might look like. The children are sitting around the two dancers, as in a circus ring, and become directly part of how the two develop dance strategies in order to come together in being “equal”, equally challenged, equally cared for and equally seen. The concrete performative experiments show how difficult it is to create equality between men and women, but also how pleasurably and humorously challenges can be tackled. This encourages the children to see their world around them differently and to question conventional concepts of men and women.
Rebecca Weingartner and Benjamin Lindh Medin were invited to the “Choreographic Laboratory for Young Audience 2018/19” organized by RESO under the direction of choreographer Erik Kaiel to develop their project idea “Equality!”. In linking the project idea together with questions concerning creation for young audiences, a 15-minute piece was created. This was performed at the end of the Choreo Lab for a school class in Monthey. In September 2019, the short piece was shown in a further developed version at the Young Dance Zug Festival. The full piece will be premiered at Theatre ROXY Birsfelden in season 2020/21.
