As a writing, producing and directing trifecta, Phil Lord ’97 and Chris Miller ’97 have become one of Hollywood’s hottest commodities. Their films—which include successful franchises such as Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, 21 Jump Street, “The Lego Movie” and “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”—have grossed more than $3.3 billion worldwide. More importantly, Phil and Chris are genuinely nice, smart guys who happen to have a knack for creating original, funny and often surprisingly poignant work.
At Dartmouth, Lord and Miller drew comic strips for The D and made short animated films that caught the eye of Disney. After graduation, they started in television (Clone High, How I Met Your Mother) before jumping to the big screen in 2009 with Meatballs. Clever, crowd-pleasing mayhem soon followed: 21 Jump Street, 22 Jump Street and The LEGO Movie (and its “block”buster franchise).
